The books balance.
Here is the balancing.
FISCUS is Latin for a woven basket. The word became the name of the Roman treasury, and from there it gave us fiscal. Every figure on this site appears twice — once where it came from and once where it went — and both sides are shown adding to nothing.
| Subscribed by backers | -16.25 |
| Held in the vault | 15.925 |
| Redeemed to backers | 0 |
| Taken by the house | 0.325 |
| the two sides | 0 |
Summed from 17 entries every time this page is drawn. Nothing here is a stored total — a stored one could disagree with the rows above it.

A worked entry
computed here, by the code that writes the book| Backing a shot with 1 SOL | Leg | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribed by backers | -1 | money in from the people who backed a shot. The treasury owes this. |
| Held in the vault | 0.98 | the balance the treasury can point at. Read, never assumed. |
| Taken by the house | 0.02 | our fee. It is an account like any other, and it is on the same page. |
| sum | 0 | it comes to nothing, so it can be written |

What the house takes
an account like any other, on the same page| our fee | 2% | taken inside the subscription entry itself, so it can never be a separate movement recorded elsewhere |
| taken so far | 0.325 | the running total, from the same legs as everything else |
| rounding | per entry | floored once per entry, which takes marginally less than charging on the total — integer division must not round toward whoever wrote the code |
What is owed
derived from the entries, never storedThe gap is the house's cut and nothing else. A treasury whose shortfall cannot be named is a treasury with a hole in it, so this figure is on the front page rather than derivable from two others further down.

in the air is the only undecided onesubscriptions are still being taken. Nothing has been decided.

the window closed short of the target. Every backer is owed their money back.
a missed shot whose refunds have all been booked. The books are square again.
What this cannot do
the part worth reading twiceThis book is the product's own record. It is not a chain, and an entry here is not a transfer.
A target reached says people backed it. It says nothing about whether they should have.
Double entry catches arithmetic, not intent. A book can balance perfectly and still describe a theft, provided the theft was written down.
A window is at most 72 hours and one subscription is capped, so a fat finger cannot put the book somewhere nobody meant.
Read it yourself
the whole pointEvery balance on this site is summed from the legs on each request. Nothing is cached and no total is stored, which is slower than the alternative and is the only reason no figure here can drift from the rows beneath it.
